And the Lord said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them.”
Genesis 11:6 NKJV
When we reach the scriptures in Genesis 11:1-6 , we can notice the description of how the people were living and in the first verse of the eleventh chapter, the Bible states the people had one language and one speech. Notice here the Bible speaks of :
- a language
- Speech
What’s a language ?
A language is a system of communication u is sed by a particular country or community.
So here we can understand that from the beginning human have always sought for a way to communicate. From this we can say that :
- oneness comes from the desire to transmit or share an idea, a vision for a commun good.
- Oneness comes from a place of understanding, not from a place of competition
- Oneness doesn’t seek its own right or privilege
- Oneness is inclusive
But we can’t speech about a language and oneness without speaking about speech because while a language is a system of communication, we need speech to fully express our ideas , thoughts etc. What does the Bible say about speech ?
“Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.”
Colossians 4:6 NKJV
It’s one thing to have a system of communication and a way ( speech) to express it, it is another thing to effectively do so.
The how is as important as the message we are trying to send across, for instance, if you don’t use sign language to a deaf person it does matter how excellent of a communicator you are , you will scream, speak or do anything and everything to make him/her understanding but it won’t work because you are using the wrong approach.
Here the deaf is literally speaking, it’s difficult to speak to someone who have been hurt by our words unless they are healed and restore reason why in our attempt to communicate with other our words need to be seasoned with grace , love whether we are rebuking a brethren or exhorting .
